Too $hort says Jive executives told him in 2006 that his career was effectively over because he was 40, in an anecdote Complex reported on October 13. He recalls label managers putting more energy behind pop acts and giving rap artists less support. Complex locates the account around the 53-minute point of his Get Got Pod appearance.

The recollection, in order

He says he waited for the contract to end, made one more album for the label, then went independent in 2008. The podcast episode itself was published October 7; Complex’s October 13 report is the newer item. This is his retrospective account of a label-era exchange, not a new retirement announcement.
