Nas sat down with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani for a short film the Mayor’s Office posted to YouTube on September 30. It is built around the Bronx School of Hip-Hop, which the city calls the country’s first hip-hop high school.

Inside the school

XXL reports the public school opened in early September in the Claremont section of the Bronx under founding principal Jason Reyes. It uses hip-hop culture as a framework for subjects like math, science, history and literature.

“We can’t be content with having been the birthplace of hip-hop,” Mamdani says, according to XXL, adding that the city wants to “still be the home.” Nas keeps the focus on students: “It’s all about the youth and how do we get them to avoid the mistakes that so many people made.”
