Bandcamp set out its generative AI policy on January 13, saying music and audio made wholly or in substantial part with AI are not permitted on the platform. The company presented the rule as part of its commitment to connecting musicians with direct support from fans.

What the policy covers

A second rule prohibits using AI tools to impersonate other artists or styles, connecting that restriction to Bandcamp’s existing policies on impersonation and intellectual property. The announcement does not supply a numerical threshold for what counts as a substantial part of a recording.

Listeners who encounter music they suspect relies heavily on generative AI can flag it through Bandcamp’s reporting tools. The platform says its team can review reports and that it reserves the right to remove music on suspicion of being AI-generated.
