Some thank-you messages follow an artist for decades. Wyclef Jean told AllHipHop that dancers still approach him to thank him for “Perfect Gentleman,” saying the record gave people a different perspective on their work.

Maxine was part of his real life

He traced its story to a woman named Maxine and a Go-Go club around the block from his high school. Those details came from his own memories, he said, rather than a character invented just for the song. The official video with Hope is linked above.

The conversation with Chuck Creekmur and DJ Thoro also got into a less nostalgic question: how do older rappers keep up? Wyclef’s answer was to prove it in the present. He said younger listeners aren’t impressed by old championship rings, and named Lil Wayne and G Herbo while talking about the energy and bars he could bring today.
