John Legend shifts into talk-sing mode on Pharrell-produced Muse
AP says Williams nudged Legend away from his power-vocal default on selected songs; the 16-track album is scheduled for Oct. 23.

John Legend’s next album grew out of a two-decade friendship with Pharrell Williams, but the collaboration also pushed him toward a different vocal pocket. In an Associated Press interview, Legend said Williams encouraged a more conversational, talk-sung delivery on songs such as “Fireflies,” easing back from the full-throttle ballad voice many listeners know him for.
Two decades of friendship led to a full album and a different vocal approach
The 16-track Muse is their first full album together. AP reports that much of it was recorded at Williams’ studio inside Louis Vuitton’s Paris headquarters, and that the idea began after Legend sang the hook on Clipse’s “The Birds Don’t Sing.”
Clipse return on “Bodies on the Floor,” giving the project another connection to the track that helped start the sessions. That link also makes Muse feel like a long-running circle of collaborators finally sharing a whole release rather than a one-off guest spot.
Apple Music’s U.S. listing still labels Muse a pre-release scheduled for Oct. 23 at this check. The date is confirmed, but the album is not being marked available until a full release listing replaces that pre-release status.
