Jay-Z has revisited Kanye West’s complaint about his collaboration with Coldplay’s Chris Martin. In Chapter 7 of JAŸ-Z IN 8, he tells Rick Rubin: “We don’t own people.” Xposure’s advance review places the exchange within a conversation about loyalty and entitlement.

An old lyric gets another perspective

Kanye’s “Big Brother” told that relationship from his perspective. According to Xposure, Jay-Z’s response to the Martin disagreement is that friendship does not give someone control over another artist’s relationships or creative opportunities. Complex’s October 10 follow-up also covers the exchange.

The episode also revisits Irv Gotti and Nas. Xposure describes Jay-Z discussing the creative competition with Nas and how their relationship changed afterward, giving the Martin exchange a wider setting among friendships and rivalries from his career.

JAŸ-Z IN 8 is an eight-part conversation with Rubin, presented by HBO. The final two chapters arrived October 9, according to Xposure’s published schedule. The official trailer below introduces the series; it is promotional footage rather than the complete “Big Brother” exchange.
