Bow Wow’s Tiny Desk brings six records from his BET years into NPR’s office. Published June 29 as part of the network’s Black Music Month tribute, the concert reaches back to “Bounce with Me” and the early Lil’ Bow Wow breakthrough.

The songs that built a television fixture

“Outta My System,” “Fresh Azimiz” and “Shortie Like Mine” come first. “Bounce with Me,” his single from Big Momma’s House, follows before “Let Me Hold You” and “Like You” close the set. The songs move between that early introduction and the releases that kept him on 106 & Park.

NPR’s Alanté Serene connects the appearance to Bow Wow’s two roles on the show: an artist repeatedly appearing in its countdowns and, later, a host. His history on both sides of the program makes him a fitting part of the BET tribute.

Marcus Devine directs the music and plays keys, with another keyboard player, guitar, drums and background singers joining the ensemble. DJ Jus handles DJ work and also sings. The musicians and DJ share the set around Bow Wow as he returns to that television-era catalog.
